Though we cannot know with exact certainty what circumstances David faced when writing this Psalm, we can be assured that his human condition was no different than ours. What we do know is that he knew from where his help would come.
Pits come in all forms, but pit-dwellers rarely feel glamorous. Whether pushed down by the muck of the world while attempting to live honorably...awaiting the fulfillment of a promise... or knee-deep in a self-imposed mess...every pit demands an upward gaze. Often, our greatest sorrows produce the most priceless Masterpieces. Jesus himself was lifted out of the deepest pit so that we could be seated at the Father’s right hand alongside Him. Just as the winds cause a flower’s roots to go deep, so will adversity strengthen those who are planted on the Rock.
